Jenny never meant for one mistake to go this far, but it went to the moon and back. It all started in seventh grade when she arrived at school in a limo.
Jenny looked over at her Hello Kitty clock with droopy eyes. She could not make out the digital haze. She put her glasses on, “Oh no, no, NO! I can’t be late for school again.” She tumbled out of bed and threw her favorite pair of pants, forgetting that she still had her PJ top on. She hurried downstairs with her hair stuck-out every which way. Her mom, Eleanor, raised her eyebrow, “I thought that you were at school.” Jenny didn’t have the time, or patients, to explain. She scarfed her cereal down and grabbed her book bag. “You do know that today is…” Eleanor started. “Bye mom!”
Jenny slammed the door shut, making the books that were about to fall out of her backpack spew everywhere, along with some paper. She tried picking them up, shoving in as much as she could, and choking back a scream of frustration. “Can’t I just get a break from all of this hectic!” She rushed down the steps. The school bus probably came five minutes ago. She cut through her next-door neighbor’s yard and…SQUISH! Jenny looked down at her sneaker to find a soggy piece of dog poo stuck to the bottom. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” she whined, “this is just great.” She tried to kick it off as she ran but that only splattered brown on her jeans.
She ran a block until she stopped dead in her tracks. “Why is there a limo in the Johnsons` driveway?” she inquired, “I thought that they went to Spain for the week.” Before her stood a white limo that had disco lights shining out of it. She looked around and made sure that nobody was looking. I’ll bet that there is something in there that I could use to wipe my pants off. she thought to herself. She checked once more to see if the coast was clear. She quickly opened the door and got in. She searched frantically for a towel or piece of cloth. Woa! She marveled at the jet-black leather cushions and the mini bar full of candy bars and soda. The driver’s window started to roll down. Jenny panicked, Somebody is in here! The window revealed a man that was dressed in all black with a black drivers cap. He had brown hair and a brown ducktail beard. “Where to miss Destiny?” he asked in a British accent. Jenny looked to see if someone was next to her, but the seat remained empty. The man stared at her, intent on a response. “Umm… East Babb Junior High.” The driver took no notice of her uncertainty and punched the address into the GPS.
The car started up and the driver pulled out of the driveway. Maybe the Johnsons ordered a limo and forgot to cancel it on their vacation. she thought. “Your shopping bags are still in the car from yesterday. You may change into them if you’d like,” he announced. Jenny looked around to find five bags of clothes. They all had designer brand names on the front. She squealed with delight as she looted through the expensive clothing. She found a yellow fringe scarf and a tunic with a picture of the sunset on it. She found a pair of red leggings that had bright yellow threading. Whatever girl’s limo this is, she sure knows how to shop. Once the driver rolled up the window, which was see-through proof, she undressed, leaving her messy clothes on the floor, and re-dressed. She still had not looked through the other two bags. She peered into them and saw diamonds and rubies. It sounds like a treasure chest, and that is exactly what it was to Jenny. She held up a ring with a ruby heart. She slipped it onto her ring finger and kept looking. There was a necklace that had a gold chain and a monarch butterfly wing, cased in plastic, in the middle. She clasped it around her neck and put on a pair of dried orange-slice hang-down earrings. Dang! I look awesome. She stuffed everything that was in the mini bar into her backpack. Just as she was about to turn on the TV, the man announced, “We are here miss.”
Jenny looked out the window and saw her school. The busses were still unloading. I’m not late; thanks to umm… what is this dude’s name? “Sir, what is your name?” she asked. “Shiloh, miss,” he replied. “Thank you, Shiloh. I gotta get going, otherwise I will be late for school.” Shiloh nodded, “I shall be here when you return.”
The second she got out of the car, she was the center of attention. Rammer, her buddy in the science fair, walked pass her and stared. “Are you new here?” he asked, dumfounded. Jenny flipped her now perfectly straight long blonde hair, “I’m surprised that you didn’t notice me, Rammer. It’s me, Jenny Kramer.” Rammer’s eyes widened to the size of golf balls, “Wow, Jenny, you look so different.” She flashed a smile, “See you in science.”
“Everybody line up to walk down to the gym for pictures,” announced Miss Lauren. Today is picture day! I totally forgot! Jenny lined up behind everyone and started walking down the hallway. Since Jenny was only third in line, she got her picture taken quickly. Normally she hated picture day, but that had all changed. She posed in front of the camera like a pro. CLICK!
“How was school honey?” Mom asked. Jenny put on the clothes that she ran out of the house in, and told Shiloh to take her jeans to the cleaners, so her mom wouldn’t suspect anything. “Spectacular! I had a great time with all of my new friends.” Eleanor looked pleased at Jenny’s response as she sat down at the kitchen table to file some insurance papers. “You should probably finish your homework, honey,” her mother suggested. Jenny replied, “I finished it on the bus driving home.” Her mom looked up from her reading spectacles quite impressed, “Well then, I guess that you could watch some TV.” Jenny smiled in return and went to the TV room. This was the best day of my life! she thought to herself.
Three days later, she had been doing the same thing since she got in the limo. She would sneak over to the limo, pretend to be Destiny, show off her outfits and limo at school, and then she would change back into her drab clothes on the way home. She told Shiloh to keep her clothing bags in the limo, so she could change for school. After three days, she has become the most popular girl in school. Jenny was ecstatic as well as wary of her parents finding out.
“Hey Jenny, could you get the mail please?” Eleanor asked. “Sure, mom,” she replied as she headed down the stairs. She skipped outside and grabbed the mail. It was heavier than usual. She closed up the mailbox and trudged inside. “There you go,” she handed the mail to her mom. Eleanor sifted through the mail and came to a yellow envelope that was full. She opened it and smiled, “Look at my baby girl all grown up! You are gorgeous.” Jenny leaned over to see what Mom was talking about. Mom got my pictures from picture day. I totally forgot that I was wearing stolen clothes! Jenny panicked. She tried to get her mom to look at something else but she was already too late. “Darling, would you mind clueing me in on what you were wearing for this. I thought that you were wearing a long sleeved shirt and jeans.” Jenny’s heart skipped a beat. “Umm… I stepped in dog poo and as I ran to school, it flung up onto my shirt. Once I got school and a girl named Destiny gave me a pair of clothes that she had in her locker just in case she needed them.” Her mother raised her eyebrow in disbelief. Jenny was sweating by now. She is gonna find out. What do I say from here? “Are you lying to me young lady, because I do not think that some girl would happen to have an a whole entire outfit in her locker, ready to be given to a person that is a stranger to her.” Jenny flinched at the tone in her mother’s voice, “I didn’t mean for it to go this far…” “What exactly do you mean? What didn’t you mean to do?” Jenny took an hour to explain everything from the morning she was late.
Eleanor sat back in her chair and looked at her daughter. “Jenny, you need to return everything to Miss Johnson and tell her the truth, along with everybody in your grade.” Jenny grimaced at the dreadful thought. Her mother stared at her, waiting for Jenny to promise to do so. “Fine.” “You are also grounded until you can earn the money to pay for the clothes,” her mom declared. “WHAT!” Jenny exclaimed. Eleanor nodded, which was the sign for End of discussion. Jenny stomped up to her room.
Two years later, Jenny was able to pay for her clothes. Two years of babysitting finally paid off for three days of fun. Now she really understood the importance of doing what was right.
